The Power of Pause.

Embracing a Break after 18 years in one industry.

After 18 years in environmental management in the mining industry being let go is a career shift as well as a deeply personal upheaval.

As highly functioning individuals we are prone to go into fixing mode by looking for the next source of income.

What you don’t realize is that your whole identity was shaped in the industry you where in, and that there will be some strong feelings of loss, frustration and even anxiety. There is, however, an invaluable opportunity in the chance to take a purposeful break.

When you acknowledge the journey of your growth, your dedication, your resilience and skill throughout the two decades you were in the industry, it becomes a celebration of your growth and the wealth of experience you gained.

The trap of spending so much time in a certain industry is that your identity is easily associated with your role. Retrenchment offers a unique change to reconnect behind the profession. You can rediscover your passions outside work. You can also explore new skills or hobbies you always wanted to try out. You can even learn a new trade or just spend time with your family. The importance is to focus on YOU.

It is important to take this break responsibly. Make good financial choices, create a lean focused budget, do a little part-time consulting and create some income flexibility.

Taking a break after a long-term career is not a luxury but a strategic investment in your professional and personal future. You are preparing yourself for a more intentional fulfilling life where you can regain clarity, confidence and purpose.
